Help
Getting started
- Open Clipter and drop your video on the Video box (or click it to browse).
- If you recorded sound on a separate microphone, drop that file on External audio. This is optional.
- Click Analyze. Clipter listens to the whole clip — a long video takes a minute or so.
- Press Space to preview. With Preview without silence on, playback skips every pause, exactly like the final cut.
- Click Export (⌘ E).
Requirements: macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Clipter reads MOV, MP4 and MXF video and WAV, M4A, AIFF and MP3 audio from any camera or recorder.
Using an external mic
Clipter compares your mic recording with the camera's own sound and lines them up automatically — no clap or timecode needed. The sync card shows how confident the match is.
- High confidence: you're done.
- Medium or Low: play a section with speech and check lip-sync. Use − frame and + frame to nudge it.
- The camera needs to have recorded some sound (even its built-in mic) for automatic sync to work.
When an external mic is used, Clipter cuts on the mic's audio (it's cleaner) and mutes the camera audio in the export. You can turn muting off in the Export window.
Tuning the cut
Start with a Style, then fine-tune if you like:
- Natural keeps short breaths and pauses — good for interviews and courses.
- Tight is the default — snappy but still relaxed.
- Jump cut removes almost every pause — fast-paced YouTube and TikTok style.
The sliders
- Silence threshold — anything quieter than this counts as silence. Raise it if pauses are left in; lower it if quiet words get cut. Auto picks a value from your audio.
- Minimum silence — pauses shorter than this are kept, so speech still breathes.
- Padding — extra time kept before and after every word, so starts and ends never get clipped.
- Ignore short sounds — clicks, taps and breaths shorter than this aren't treated as speech.
In the waveform, kept parts are solid and removed silence is shaded. Click to jump, drag to scroll, and hold ⌘ while scrolling to zoom.
Exporting
Editable project (recommended)
Your editor gets a timeline of the kept clips, pointing at your original files. Nothing is re-encoded, so quality is untouched, and you can drag any clip edge to bring back a word.
- Final Cut Pro (10.6 or later): Clipter opens it automatically. Look for the new Clipter event.
- DaVinci Resolve: File › Import › Timeline… and choose the saved
.fcpxml. - Premiere Pro: File › Import… and choose the saved
.xml.
Rendered video
A finished file with the silences removed, for CapCut, direct upload or any app.
- Compatible — H.264 MP4, plays everywhere. 8-bit, best for publishing.
- Smaller — HEVC MP4, the same look at about half the size.
- Editing — ProRes 422 MOV, near-original quality for further editing or colour grading. Files are large.
Shooting Log or 10-bit footage you plan to grade? Use Editable project or Editing to keep the full colour range.

Troubleshooting
Final Cut says "Invalid edit with no respective media"
This means Final Cut read the clip's start time differently. Make sure you're on the latest Clipter, re-export, and import again. If it still happens, email us the camera model and the file type and we'll fix it.
The sync looks off
Play a part with clear speech and use − frame / + frame until lips match. If the camera recorded no sound at all, sync has to be set by hand.
Quiet words are being cut
Lower the Silence threshold a few dB, or raise Padding.
Too many pauses are left in
Raise the Silence threshold, lower Minimum silence, or switch to the Jump cut style.
Rendering a video failed
The message under the progress bar includes an error code — please email it to us. Meanwhile, try the Smaller quality, or export an Editable project and render from your editor.
My purchase isn't recognised
Choose Restore purchase and make sure you're signed in to the App Store with the Apple ID you bought Clipter with.
